DIY Hair Accessory

Do you know what I love about New Years?

Besides the fact that it represents a fresh start, I also love that it gives me an occasion to wear a sparkly headpiece. I suppose I could wear it any day, but it just seems so befitting when I’m surrounded by glittering decorations and twinkling lights.

Since one of my resolutions this year is to spend more time on DIY projects, it only seemed appropriate that I make my very own sparkly hair accessory for New Years. The best part is that it is SUPER easy and inexpensive to make, and I totally love it! Here’s how I did it:

I went to Michael’s and browsed through their jewelry section until I found this lovely little piece, which happened to be on clearance for $2.98.

I chose this piece because I love the marquis shaped stones and it was also a great size (6″ long) for what I had envisioned.

While at Michael’s I also picked up some lustrous silver ribbon ($3.00) and 10 mm jump rings ($2.00) because the rings at the end of the jewelry piece were too small to fit the ribbon through.

Once home, I measured my head to see how long I needed to cut the ribbon. I wanted some extra ribbon to hang down once the piece was finished so I wound up using 42″ total, which I cut into two pieces measuring 21″ each.

I folded one end of each ribbon over 1/2″ to make a small loop so that I could attach the jump rings. I pinned the fold in place.

Then I stitched the loop closed. I did this by hand because the ribbon was quite slippery, but you could use a machine if you prefer. You could also remove the jump rings before stitching the loops closed-I left mine in because I wanted to sew as close to the jump ring as possible to keep them from sliding around.

Once the loops are sewn shut, you should have something that looks like this:

Next I opened up the jump ring slightly by using needle nose pliers. Then I slid on one end of the jewelry piece, and closed the ring back up. Then I did the same with the other ribbon and the other end of the jewelry piece.

And that’s it! It is ready to wear and bedazzle!

Obviously you can use whatever ribbon and jewelry piece you wish, these just happened to catch my eye and go with my dress.

I hope you all have a happy and safe New Years Eve! Check back tomorrow to see the rest of my outfit and the shenanigans that will surely ensue at the party!
